There is a lot of scientific research that links lack of natural light and various disorders (such as seasonal affective disorder). But what about choosing the type of indoor lighting in our spaces?
Artificial lighting, when chosen consciously, can actually support health and wellbeing.
The graph above shows the spectrums of different lighting sources, as it can be seen, the only one with a smooth homogeneous curve of wavelengths is natural light.
Several holistic doctors around the world have been showing the negative effects of blue light exposure. Blue wavelengths and disharmonious wavelength curves can be responsible for blocking of melatonin production, the hormone naturally produced after sunset.
Melatonin is responsible for sleep, healing and emotional state. Lack of melatonin can potentially lead to serious health issues.
What to do?
Make sure you avoid compact fluorescent bulbs, and cool LEDs as they have unbalanced spectrum as can been seen in the graph.
Best option is to use incandescent bulbs, as they are the closest to the sunlight in terms of spectrum. Second best option is halogen bulbs. If those are not a choice for any reason, choose full spectrum bulbs.
